Hand carving bone is a tradition that has been preserved throughout the generations. This Jo Marz bone box has been handcrafted by shaping and piecing together sections of ox bone reclaimed from oxen raised as a food source. Prior to bone reclamation for the creation of handcrafted items, the animal bones were discarded and served no purpose. After gluing these pieces together they are smoothed and the edges are sanded and rounded. In the final stage, the box has detailed scrimshaw, tattooing and color applied and is then polished. Because each box takes a minimum of 12 hours to create, only a limited amount are made and that design will not be reproduced again. For over a decade, Jo Marz has combined unusual imported and domestic materials, semiprecious stones and unique findings to create highly collectible designs that are hand crafted by artisans
