This 9th century cross is a replica from Co. Meath, Ireland. All sides of the original Duleek cross are decorated, this crosses' east face is represented here with it's knotwork, spirals, and mazes; all symbolic elements of Celtic art. In the center of the cross are seven raised spirals. These are thought to represent the dance of heavenly bodies around the sun. In the 9th century, it was believed there were five planets, the sun and moon. Hence, the seven swirls.
